Background to the Symposium

The First Interdisciplinary Nobel Laureate Symposium on Global Sustainability was convened in Potsdam, Germany in October 2007 by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK).

Fifteen Nobel Laureates, several top-level politicians and other renowned experts gathered to address the themes of climate stabilisation, energy security and sustainable development. The results of this Symposium were summarised in the unanimously adopted Potsdam Memorandum and later presented at the United Nations Climate Conference in Bali.
